Messe Basel

Art Basel 2017

15. – 18. Juni 2017

Art Basel is the premier international art show of its kind for Modern and contemporary works, bringing 291 leading galleries from around the world to the heart of Europe. The exhibition includes the highest-quality paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, video and editioned works.

Art Basel embraces different sectors:

  • Galleries: The anchor of Art Basel is its Galleries sector, where a selection of the world’s leading galleries of Modern and Contemporary art show 20th- and 21st-century artworks. Visitors will discover a breadth of works including paintings, drawings, sculpture, installations, prints, photography, video and digital art by more than 4,000 artists.
  • Feature: The Feature sector emphasizes precisely curated projects that may include solo presentations by an individual artist, or juxtapositions and thematic exhibits from artists representing a range of cultures, generations, and artistic approaches.
  • Statements: In this sector, Art Basel presents exciting new solo projects by young, emerging artists. Each year, two outstanding artists in this sector are awarded the Baloise Art Prize. The Baloise Group also acquires works by the award-winning artists which it donates to important European art institutions.
  • Edition: Leading publishers of editioned works, prints, and multiples exhibit the results of their collaboration with renowned artists.
  • Unlimited is Art Basel’s pioneering exhibition platform for projects that transcend the limitations of a classical art-show stand. This year’s edition of Unlimited will consist of 76 large-scale projects, presented by galleries participating in the fair. The innovative work includes out-sized sculpture and paintings, video projections, large-scale installations, and live performances. Unlimited is curated by Gianni Jetzer, curator-at-large at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C.
  • Magazines: Art publications from around the world display their magazines in single-magazine stands or the collective booth. Editors and publishers are often present at the show and many magazines contribute presentations to the Conversations series, a schedule of presentations, lectures, and discussions by a range of speakers.
  • Parcours is the sector which engages the city’s historical Münster neighborhood with site-specific sculptures, interventions, and performances by renowned international artists and emerging talents. Parcours is open to the public and free of charge. The sector is curated by Basel-based Samuel Leuenberger.
  • Film: Art Basel’s week-long program of films by and about artists is curated by Cairo-based film curator and lecturer Maxa Zoller.

In addition, Swiss artist Claudia Comte will transform Basel’s Messeplatz into an immersive funfair – where visitors even can win original artworks!
