Voilà trois lettres qui titrent une exposition. Trois lettres en action, permutables, qui forment aussi un mot. e a u, eau. Et de l’eau, il en est bien question dans cette exposition de Jarbas Lopes. Elle est même là, descendant, parfois, l’escalier. Emportant avec elle, particules d’expositions, d’humains, d’organismes, d’histoires. Nettoyant l’espace et mettant le centre d’art en mouvement, laissé alors disponible à la pratique d’une pensée collective. Ici Jarbas Lopes est une liane. Il collabore avec le bâtiment. Il fait corps avec ses épais murs, ses longs couloirs, ses grandes fenêtres, ses habitants, son environnement, avec nous. Et nous sommes multiples. Il pense « avec », nous assouplit, teste notre conductivité, notre élasticité et notre résistance. Partout, il met la main, tissant ainsi des relations insensées. Et si le tissage relève d’une de ses technologies de prédilection – une technologie ancienne qui a permis aux humains de fabriquer des filets, sacs et autres contenants, et aux populations de se déplacer et de vivre en mouvement – le tissage apparaît en outre comme la métaphore d’une pensée des entrelacs, d’une pensée de l’embrouille presque. Jarbas Lopes pense avec les mains. Il fabrique des objets – peintures élastiques, peintures choc, peintures circulaires, peintures oraculaires, dessins prospectifs, sculptures praticables et instables, livres – qui relèvent de gestes spéculatifs, de gestes qui aménagent un imaginario capable de laisser venir la moindre utopie. c

Three letters making up the title of an exhibition. Three interchangeable letters in action, that also make up a word. e a u, eau. French for water. And it’s very much a question of water in this exhibition by Jarbas Lopes. Water is even there in person, sometimes descending the staircase. Sweeping away particles of exhibitions, humans, organisms, stories. Cleaning out the space and setting the art centre in movement, leaving it open to thinking as a group activity. Here Jarbas Lopes is a liana. He works together with the building. He is one with its thick walls, long corridors and high windows, with its inhabitants and its environment – with us. And we are many and varied. He thinks „with“, loosens us up, tests our conductivity, elasticity and resistance. With a hand in every pie he weaves the craziest interrelationships. And if this weaving draws on one of his favourite technologies – one that has allowed humans to make nets and bags and other containers, and people to relocate and live on the move – it also looks like a metaphor for intertwined thinking, for muddle almost. Lopes thinks with his hands. He fabricates objects – elastic paintings, shock paintings, circular paintings, oracular paintings, experimental drawings, unstable „practicable“ sculptures, books – which involve acts of speculation, gestures that set up an imaginario capable of welcoming utopia in any and every form. c
