Art Basel 2021 – the return to Basel

With just about two weeks to go until Basel turns into an art-lovers’ utopia it is about time that we talk about Art Basel week. After the 2020 edition unfortunately fell through due to … well, you know… we are now all the more excited to have put together an extensive guide on all the art fairs that are due to take place at the end of September.

So let’s start with the big one: Art Basel. The in 1970 founded Art Basel is one of the most renowned art fairs across the globe and attracted nearly 93,000 visitors in 2019 alone. Located within Hall 1 & 2 of Messe Basel, it extends across 27,500 square meters of exhibition space. This year, it will take place between 24^th – 26^th of September from 11am to 7pm, with an invite-only vernissage on Thursday, September 23^rd from 2pm to 7pm.

Due to covid regulations the reduced numbers of tickets for this year’s fair need to be purchased online in advance. Moreover, visitors need to provide proof that they have either recovered from covid, tested negative or been fully vaccinated (covid certificate).

But no worries for those who cannot make it to Basel in person, because this year’s fair will be in a hybrid format, combining both physical and digital experiences via the new digital platform Art Basel Live.

While the central focus of Art Basel lies on modern and contemporary art, the fair offers a wide range of experiences. It is made up of 272 galleries (out of which 24 participate for the first time) from 33 countries which are separated into four sectors. The Main sector in Hall 2 will present 221 leading galleries, showing painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, photography, video, digital, and editioned works of the highest quality. For the first time, six joint booths will be featured in this sector. Moreover, the Editions sector will feature print and editioned works by 10 leading galleries and is spread accord both floors of Hall 2 while the Feature sector exhibits solo and duo-exhibitions by 24 galleries. Similarly, the Statements sector will show 18 solo presentations from artists who are competing for the 22^nd Baloise Art Prize. While up to two winners will be awarded a staggering CHF 30,000 prize, multiple artists may have their work bought by Baloise Group and exhibited at leading European museums.

But Art Basel is not a generic art fair and aside from Galleries also features a panel discussion series called Conversations which is curated by e-flux co-director Julieta Aranda and due to take place in the auditorium in Hall 1.0. Represented will be a wide range of members of the international art world such as critics, artists, curators and collectors who will offer various different perspectives on the global contemporary art scene.

Those who prefer a Film over a panel will be pleased to hear that Stadtkino Basel is once again holding screenings as part of Art Basel. The programme is curated by Filipa Ramos and Marian Masone and will include two special portrait films.

For those seeking a more interactive experience, the Messeplatz will be transformed into an engaging stage featuring two site-specific installations and performances by both Monster Chetwynd and Cecilia Bengolea. These will engage visitors and residents alike and create a dynamic dialogue.

On top of this, the Art Basel’s Unlimited situated in Hall 1 provides a unique space for 62 large-scale projects such as installations, sculptures, wall paintings, video projections or photographic series, transforming Art Basel from an art fair into an immersive art experience.

Talking about installations, the Art Basel Parcours curated by Samuel Leuenberger is also returning this year. Under the theme ‘Can we find happiness together again?’ 20 site-specific large-scale installations and performances in various locations throughout the city will extend Art Basel’s borders across the whole of Basel. It thus perfectly rounds up the experience and invites viewers to explore the entire city.

Art Basel 2021 – die Rückkehr nach Basel

Noch gut zwei Wochen, dann transformiert sich Basel wieder zum Nabel der Kunstwelt. Nach einer Zwangspause aus uns allen nur allzu bekannten Gründen – die letzte Ausgabe der Art fand im Juni 2019 statt – kehrt die Messe nun wieder in physischer Form nach Basel zurück.

Die 1970 gegründete Art Basel ist eine der renommiertesten Kunstmessen der Welt und zog alleine in 2019 über 93’000 Besucherinnen und Besucher an. Auch dieses Jahr befindet sie sich auf dem Basler Messegelände in den Hallen 1 und 2, wo sie sich über insgesamt 27’000 Quadratmeter erstreckt.  Stattfinden wird sie dieses Jahr zwischen dem 24. Und 26. September von 11-19 Uhr, nach einer privaten Vernissage am 23. September zwischen 14 und 19 Uhr. Aufgrund der geltenden Corona-Massnahmen ist die Besucherzahl dieses Jahr beschränkt, und Tickets sind nur im Online-Vorverkauf erhältlich. Für den Besuch ist ein Covid-Zertifikat (3G) notwendig.

Wer es dieses Jahr nicht schafft, die Messe physisch zu besuchen, braucht aber nicht ganz auf Art Basel Feeling zu verzichten: Dieses Jahr wird es dank der neuen Plattform Art Basel Live eine Mischung aus physischen und digitalen Angeboten geben.

Das Herzstück der Messe formen die 272 diesjährigen Galerien aus 33 verschiedenen Ländern (davon nehmen 24 zum ersten Mal teil), die in 4 verschiedene Sektoren unterteilt werden. Im Main Sektor zeigen 221 führende Galerien eine beinahe unermessliche Vielfalt an Malerei, Skulptur, Zeichnung, Photographie, Videos, Installationen und digitaler Kunst. Erstmalig sind in diesem Sektor auch sechs Gemeinschaftsstände anzutreffen. Des weiteren wird der Editions Sektor Drucke und Multiples von 10 Galerien in beiden Stockwerken der Halle 2 ausstellen, während der Feature Sektor Einzel- und Doppelpräsentationen von 24 Galerien präsentiert. Zu guter Letzt findet man weitere Solo-Projekte auch im Statements Sektor, wo 18 Ausstellungen um den 22. Baloise Kunstpreis konkurrieren. Die Gewinner können sich über ein Preisgeld von CHF 30’000 freuen, doch auch die übrigen Künstlerinnen und Künstler können darauf hoffen, dass die Baloise Group Werke von ihnen kaufen und in führenden europäischen Museen ausstellen wird.

Natürlich erschöpft sich das Angebot der Art Basel nicht in einer klassischen Kunstmesse. Abgesehen von den Galerieständen wird es bei der Art Basel im Auditorium der Halle 1 auch wiederum die Diskussionsreihe Conversations geben, welche von der e-flux co-Direktorin Julieta Aranda organisiert wird. Hier werden führende Köpfe der internationalen Kunstszene den Besucherinnen und Besuchern unterschiedliche Perspektiven zur globalen zeitgenössischen Kunst geben.

Wer weniger Interesse an Panels, dafür aber umso mehr Interesse an Film hat, wird sicher erfreut darüber sein, dass das Stadtkino Basel wieder den Film Sektor der Art Basel beheimatet. Das Filmprogramm wurde sorgfältig von den Kuratorinnen Filipa Ramos und Marian Masone ausgesucht und enthält auch zwei spezielle Portrait-Filme.

Des weiteren gibt es für Besucherinnen und Besucher, welche auf der Suche nach eher interaktiver Kunst sind, auf dem Messeplatz zwei eindrucksvolle Installationen und Performances von Monster Chetwynd und Cecilia Bengolea. Dabei wollen sie einen Dialog zwischen dem Art-Publikum und Bewohnerinnen und Bewohnern der Stadt, aber auch zwischen den Kunstwerken selbst herstellen.

Zudem bietet die Unlimited der Art Basel einen perfekten Ort für eine Reihe von rund 62 grossformatigen Installationen, Skulpturen, Wandgemälden, Videoprojektionen und fotografischen Ausstellungen, welche die Art Basel von einer generischen Kunstmesse in ein komplettes Erlebnisprogramm verwandeln.

Doch es gibt nicht nur auf der Messe selbst Installationen zu bewundern, denn mit dem Art Basel Parcours erstreckt sich die Art Basel über die ganze Stadt. Parcours ist eine Reihe von 20 grossformatigen Installationen und Performances, welche sowohl im öffentlichen Bereich als auch privaten Veranstaltungsorten vorzufinden sind und sorgfältig von Samuel Leuenberger kuratiert wurden. Somit rundet Parcours die Art Basel perfekt ab und nimmt lädt Sie ein die gesamte Stadt zu erkunden.
