Art Basel Week 2022 – far more fairs

Art Basel itself is a large and multifaceted fair, so it takes visitors quite a while to get through. But there’s even more to explore in and around Basel! Over time, other fairs have settled around Art Basel, taking place at the same time, so during this one week in June, the entire city turns into a huge exhibition space and spectacle. Here’s an overview of fairs joining Art Basel this year.

With the special pandemic situation in 2021, quite a few fairs left their usual location and convened at the Messe Basel. While some stay at their 2021 location, others return to their previously established locations – or even move to a new location.

Design Miami/Basel is a global forum for collectible design, presenting top international galleries for historical and contemporary furniture, lighting, and objets d’art. This year’s theme is The Golden Age: Rooted in the Past, celebrating the flexibility, resilience and adaptability of humanity. The fair takes place at Hall 1 Süd, Messe Basel from Tuesday to Sunday, June 14-19 (Preview for collectors and VIP on Monday). Flagship events are held in a hybrid physical and digital format. This year’s lineup includes 30 international galleries and designers – additionally, Curios, objects, textures, artifacts and ideas that challenge and contextualize familiar design narratives, are interspersed amongst the gallery program to infuse the fair with inventive snapshots of today’s design landscape.

Liste Art Fair Basel, “the mother of satellite fairs” in Basel, is an international fair for new discoveries in contemporary art. A younger generation of galleries exhibits artists representing the latest developments and trends in contemporary art. This year, 82 galleries from 37 countries will present works by over 100 artists from Monday to Sunday, June 13-19, returning to Hall 1.1 at Messe Basel where already the 2021 edition took place. As of 2021, there will also be two online formats, Liste Showtime Online, a digital art fair, and Liste Expedition Online, a digital research forum.

The Swiss Design Awards exhibition is the most important annual meeting for the Swiss design scene. The Federal Office of Culture showcases all aspects of contemporary Swiss design in an international context. All Swiss designers and designers working in Switzerland can take part in the competition, 17 Prizes are awarded. The exhibition moves from Hall 3, where it was located in the previous years, to Hall 1.1, Messe Basel from Monday to Sunday, June 13-19. On display are around 50 projects by the finalists and a rich supporting program places them in a wider context.

The Swiss Art Awards exhibition accompanies the Swiss Art Competition. Held annually since 1899, it is the world’s oldest art award. The exhibition is organized by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture and offers an insight into current art and architecture in Switzerland. Together with the Swiss Design Awards, this year’s edition moves to Hall 1.1, Messe Basel, and will be open from Monday to Sunday, June 13-19.

Photo Basel is Switzerland’s first and only international art fair dedicated to photography based art. Around 40 galleries from 18 different nations will showcase works by 130 artists. The fair runs from Tuesday to Sunday, June 14-19 and takes place at Volkshaus Basel, which is only a 10 minute walk from Messe Basel.

VOLTA Basel aims to give new and medium-sized galleries an international platform. This year’s edition features 68 galleries from 26 countries. The show will be open from Monday to Sunday, June 13-19 at ELYS, Elsässerstrasse 215 A, in the St. Johann neighborhood.

June is an art fair founded in 2019, that prioritizes an open format and encourages the intergenerational group of participants to communicate and collaborate. June will return to its previous location at Riehenstrasse 90B, an iconic concrete bunker right next to Messe Basel. The fair will open Monday, June 13 with a VIP Preview and remain on view to the public until Sunday, June 19.

I Never Read is an Art Book Fair, entry is free and open to anyone. The event brings together national and international publishers, artists, authors and designers who choose the book as their instrument for art production. It returns to its pre-pandemic location at Kaserne Basel from Wednesday, June 15 to Saturday, June 18.

Art Basel Week 2022 – 1 Messe ist nicht genug

Die Art Basel selbst ist eine grosse Messe, deshalb brauchen Besucher:innen schon eine ganze Weile für einen Durchgang. Doch in und um Basel gibt es noch viel mehr zu entdecken! Im Laufe der Zeit haben sich um die Art Basel einige andere Messen angesiedelt, die zur gleichen Zeit stattfinden. In dieser einen Juniwoche verwandelt sich also die ganze Stadt in einen riesigen Ausstellungsraum und ein Spektakel. Hier kommt ein Überblick über die diesjährigen Nebenmessen:

Die Design Miami/Basel ist eine Designmesse mit internationalen Top-Galerien für historische und zeitgenössische Möbel, Beleuchtung und Kunstobjekten. Dieses Jahr lautet das Thema The Golden Age: rooted in the past – gefeiert werden die Flexibilität, Belastbarkeit und Anpassungsfähigkeit der Menschheit. Die Messe findet in Halle 1 Süd der Messe Basel von Dienstag 14. bis Sonntag 19. Juni statt (Vorschau für Sammler:innen und VIP am Montag). Veranstaltungen werden in hybrider Form abgehalten, vor Ort und online. Dieses Jahr nehmen 30 internationale Galerien und Designer:innen teil – zusätzlich mischen sich unter die Ausstellung Curios, Objekte, Strukturen, Artefakte und Ideen, die gewohnte Designnarrative einordnen und hinterfragen und so die Messe mit einfallsreichen Schnappschüssen aus der heutigen Designlandschaft bereichern.

Liste Art Fair Basel ist eine internationale Entdeckermesse für zeitgenössische Kunst. Eine jüngere Generation von Galerien zeigt Künstler:innen, die herausragende Vertreter der neuesten Entwicklungen und Tendenzen in der Gegenwartskunst sind. Dieses Jahr präsentieren 82 Galerien aus 37 Ländern Werke von über 100 Künstler:innen in der Halle 1.1 der Messe Basel von Montag bis Sonntag, 13. bis 19. Juni. Seit 2021 gibt es auch zwei Onlineformate, Liste Showtime Online, eine digitale Kunstmesse, und Liste Expedition Online, ein nicht kommerzielles Rechercheforum.

Die Ausstellung des Schweizer Designwettbewerbs (Swiss Design Awards) ist jährlich das wichtigste Treffen der Schweizer Designszene. In einem internationalen Kontext zeigt das Bundesamt für Kultur das aktuelle Schweizer Designschaffen in all seinen Facetten. Alle Schweizer:innen und in der Schweiz wohnhafte Designer:innen können am Wettbewerb teilnehmen, 17 Preise werden vergeben. Die Ausstellung ist dieses Jahr von der Halle 3 in die Halle 1.1 der Messe Basel umgezogen, und läuft von Montag 13. bis Sonntag 19. Juni. Gezeigt werden die rund 50 Projekte der Finalistinnen und Finalisten und ein reiches Rahmenprogramm stellt diese in einen weiteren Kontext.

Auch der Schweizer Kunstwettbewerb (Swiss Art Awards) wird von einer Ausstellung begleitet. Seit 1899 wird der Kunstpreis jährlich verliehen und ist damit der älteste der Welt. Die Ausstellung wird vom Bundesamt für Kultur organisiert und ermöglicht einen Einblick in aktuelle Kunst und Architektur der Schweiz. Die diesjährige Ausgabe findet wie die Swiss Design Awards in der Halle 1.1 der Messe Basel statt, ebenfalls von Montag 13. bis Sonntag 19. Juni.

Die June Art Fair wurde 2019 gegründet. Man legt Wert auf ein offenes Format und ermutigt die generationsübergreifende Gruppe der Teilnehmenden zu Interaktion und Zusammenarbeit. Die Messe findet in der Riehenstrasse 90B statt, in einem ikonischen Betonbunker direkt neben der Messe Basel. Die Show wird am Montag, 13. Juni mit einer VIP Vorschau eröffnet und bleibt im Anschluss offen für alle bis Sonntag, 19. Juni.

I Never Read ist eine Messe für Kunstbücher mit kostenlosem Eintritt für alle. Das Event bringt nationale und internationale Verlage, Künstler:innen, Autor:innen und Designer:innen zusammen, die das Buch als Instrument für ihre Kunstproduktion gewählt haben. Veranstaltungsort ist die Kaserne Basel, geöffnet von Mittwoch 15. bis Sonntag 18. Juni.

Die Photo Basel ist die erste und einzige internationale Fotokunstmesse der Schweiz. Um die 40 Aussteller aus 18 verschiedenen Ländern zeigen Werke von 130 Künstler:innen. Die Messe läuft von Dienstag bis Sonntag, 14. bis 19. Juni und ist im Volkshaus Basel angesiedelt, nur 10 Minuten zu Fuss von der Messe Basel.

VOLTA Basel hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, jungen und mittelständischen Galerien eine internationale Plattform zu geben. Dieses Jahr sind 68 Galerien aus 26 Ländern mit dabei. Die Messe ist von Montag bis Sonntag, 13. bis 19. Juni geöffnet im ELYS, in der Elsässerstrasse 215 A im St. Johann-Quartier.
