Melanie Dorfer: habitats shifts

Melanie Dorfer (b. 1986 in Sindelfingen, Germany) studied painting at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Her paintings are inextricably linked to their material, from which they are often quite literally generated. Rather than considering the canvas as a neutral background for the actual image, Dorfer works directly with it. For her large-scale works, she starts from existing formats and structures into which she incorporates additional variables (colour, formatting) so as to transform the image and open the way for a metamorphosis to happen.

Her paintings are never rigid, their attraction deriving from the organic processes that seem to underpin them, such as fusion, disintegration or mutation.
