Landscape – A Story of Rehabilitation

Die Ausstellung Landscape – A Story of Rehabilitation fordert die Landschaft zum Dialog auf. Gleichzeitig versucht sie, ihr als Genre oder Gattung auf den Grund zu gehen. Es wird immer wieder die Frage gestellt, ob sie als solche noch eine Validität besitzt, die über die kunstimmanente Fragestellung hinausgeht. Die Ikonografien der Romantik, die Klischees, Kitsch und Stereotypien spielen genauso eine Rolle, wie die kritische, wenn auch utopisierende, Weiterentwicklung der Landschaft als menschliche Umgebung und Überlebensbereich. Landschaftskult, Atmosphäre, Konstruktion und Dekonstruktion der Landschaft spielen genauso eine Rolle wie das Wechselspiel von Unmittelbarkeit und Distanz, kulturellen Konventionen und emotionale Besetzungen. Die Natur wird als politische und ästhetische Landschaft analysiert. Ein intermedialer Zugriff steht in der Ausstellung im Vordergrund.

Das Thema Landschaft ist sicherlich nicht aus der bildenden Kunst verschwunden – wie könnte es auch, wo die Natur doch der wichtigste Bestandteil der menschlichen Existenz ist! Allerdings arbeitet die Idee des Landschaftsbildes als eigenständige Gattung seit der Industrialisierung immer mit wechselnden Bedeutungen, sie passt sich den sich dramatisch verändernden gesellschaftlichen Umständen an. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg war sie im historischen Wandel als Gattung verschwunden, da sie zu sehr mit dem Impressionismus uns Postimpressionismus und seinen politischen Implikationen assoziiert wurde. Heute feiert die Interpretation der Landschaft ein zaghaftes Comeback.

Im Zentrum der Ausstellung Landscape – A Story of Rehabilitation steht die Landschaft in ihrer Vielfältigkeit. Neun Künstler, die sich in verschiedenen Medien bewegen, zeigen Aspekte ihres persönlichen Ansatzes zum Thema.

The exhibition Landscape – A Story of Rehabilitation aims to challenge this genre or category within the context of contemporary art making. The question is being asked if such a categorization still carries validity beyond the traditional analysis and introspection. The iconography of Romanticism, ideological clichées, Kitsch and stereotypes are of interest as well as the critical, yet sometimes, utopian development of the landscape as “environment” and human living space. The artists are preoccupied with landscape as cult, the idea of the “outdoors”, construction and deconstruction of space, as much as the interplay of immediacy and distance, cultural conventions, emotional preoccupations and associations. Furthermore, landscape can be both, political and aesthetic.

Nature and the depiction of the land has all but disappeared from the agenda in the visual arts – how could it, as nature is vital to human existence! However, as independent artistic genre, in existence since Industrialization, landscape has been superimposed with changing meanings. Used as ideological space, landscape had to adapt to the dramatically changing social and political environment. After World War II, the genre basically disappeared as it was associated with the seemingly idealist and beautifully formal implications of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism and (ab)used as backdrop for political propaganda in the 1930s and 40s. Today, a new access to the subject is celebrating a cautious comeback.

Landscape – A Story of Rehabilitation aims to re-introduce the genre. Nine artists show their take on the topic in different media. The subject in its seemingly “classical form” is placed in the center of the exhibition and set the agenda in an almost academic-didactic, yet critical sense.
