Strange Homes
1. – 3. Juli 2022
The home is a place of habits, of rituals, is a place of retreat where public evaluation seems to recedes into the background. Following this logic, the home would thus be in a relationship of tension with the rest of the world, would form one pole of the ambivalence of the privately-subjective to the socially-public
The exhibition ‚Strange Homes‘ explores the questions of how social demands, adaptation and social performance influence this space of privacy, how habits adapt to the surrounding social context, how living space in itself, beyond the shelter it forms, is certainly permeated by social norms, valuation and thus a kind of public sphere.
The positions presented pursue these questions and, based on this, deal with intimacy and sensitivity as well as emotional and bodily states, juxtaposing self-perception and self-assessment with an external perception.
The anachronistic quality of traditional symbolism in the design of one’s own living space is as much a matter of consideration, as its change and negotiation.
Beyond this, however, questions of inhabitation itself, of the ownership of living space, as well as its real-political-urban context also arise.
In the diversity of approaches, the exhibition ‚Strange Homes‘ traces living/inhabiting as a complex process of localization on an individual and social level, in which demarcation seems to be both constituent and only very conditionally existent.
