Joseph Leung: The Flag of Hong Kong Waving In Wind
22. September – 16. Oktober 2021
Art Basel Week Hours (10-16 June 2024): Tue-Sat 18-20 | Sat/Sun 9-11 |
Conceptual photography is at the centre of the work of Hong Kong-based artist Joseph Leung Mong Sum. The artist (*1995) graduated from the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong with first class honors, and went on an exchange program at the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University in New York. He later graduated from the MFA program at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He first attracted attention with his ten-part series ‚The Flag Of Hong Kong Waving In Wind‘, which depicts the Hong Kong flag in black and white. Yet the five-petalled bauhinia—Hong Kong‘s emblem—is barely visible, almost enveloped by the ‚Red‘ surrounding it. In this way, Joseph Leung subtly expresses the people‘s fears, anxieties and hopes of the changes taking place.
In his first solo exhibition in Europe, ten photos from the 2020 series will be presented for the first time at lotsremark on the occasion of Art Basel.
