Oscar Chan Yik Long: To Sleep and Wake Unafraid
14. – 22. Juni 2025
Based in Helsinki and born in Hong Kong, Oscar brings a unique voice to this site-specific presentation in a 16th-century building in the heart of Basel’s Old Town.
The exhibition title is inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s Hour of the Wolf (1968), which refers to the liminal hours before dawn when emotions rise from both the conscious and unconscious mind. For Chan, these moments reflect a universal need for spaces of self-understanding, healing, and growth. He invites us to consider how our everyday actions shape both body and mind—drawing on principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine to guide this reflection.
Shown for the first time in Switzerland, A Horror to the Eyes of All Men Seeking Faith (2023) is presented as a prelude to this new body of work. This earlier painting cycle sets the tone for the exhibition’s exploration of vulnerability, ritual, and transformation.
Known for his standalone ink paintings and large-scale ephemeral murals, Chan’s practice interweaves East Asian philosophy, mythology, and spiritual traditions with Western classical and symbolist influences. Horror cinema and global pop culture further infuse his work, forging a visual language that bridges ancestral memory with contemporary experience.
